Bailey Happy With Lowther as William Hill Lincoln Weights Are Revealed 160211

Trainer Alan Bailey is hoping that the rain stays away ahead of the £100,000 William Hill Lincoln (3.05pm) at Doncaster on Saturday, April 2, for which his big hope Lowther (25/1 with sponsor William Hill) is set to carry 9st 2lb.
Weights for the historic mile handicap are revealed today, Wednesday, February 16, and last year’s victor Penitent (14/1 co-favourite), trained by William Haggas, heads the list of 118 horses with 9st 11lb.
Initially allotted 8st 11lb, Lowther picked up a 5lb penalty for holding off fellow William Hill Lincoln hope Norman Orpen (8st 3lb, 25/1) when winning an extended mile handicap at Wolverhampton on February 14.
The six-year-old gelding has been in fine form on the Polytrack this winter having, unusually, commenced his career as a four-year-old in a two-mile Ludlow bumper.
Bailey, who trains in Newmarket, revealed today: "Lowther will definitely go to Doncaster for the William Hill Lincoln if the ground is good or good to firm – soft ground would be against him. He gets a 5lb penalty for Monday’s win, so that will put him on 9st 2lb.
"He’s been going nicely on the all-weather this winter and I’m very pleased with everything. He’s run some good races and is doing well.
"He started in a bumper at Ludlow two years ago but that was the type of horse he seemed to be at the time.
"He was a funny horse, very tricky. He threw a wobbly when I took him to Southwell the next time and wouldn’t go into the stalls once the handlers touched him, but I took him to Yarmouth after that and he won a mile maiden.
"I thought six furlongs was his trip for a long time and he was only beaten a neck at that trip in the Ayr Silver Cup a couple of seasons back. They ran a faster time than the Ayr Gold Cup that year.
"He has won over seven furlongs and a mile and he might even stay a mile and a quarter because he’s by Beat All and he wasn’t doing much when he hit the front at Wolverhampton on Monday."
Sponsor William Hill currently has nine horses sharing 14/1 co-favouritism. The progressive Andrew Balding-trained Brick Red is set to carry 8st 7lb, Doctor Crane from the John Gosden stable has 8st 10lb, while his stablemates Nationalism and Taqleed have been allotted 9st 2lb and 8st 9lb, respectively.
Of the remaining co-favourites, the Michael Jarvis-trained Eton Forever and the Haggas-trained Kalk Bay are both due to shoulder 8st 6lb, while the Barry Hills-trained Gunner Lindley has been given 8st 7lb and last season’s William Hill Spring Mile winner Irish Heartbeat, one of 15 entries for Malton trainer Richard Fahey, is set to carry 8st 10lb.
The Cheka (20/1), part-owned by comedian Mel Smith and trained by Eve Johnson Houghton, has 9st 7lb, while the consistent Kilburn (7st 10lb) is owned by the racing club of Royal Windsor Racecourse, which like Doncaster Racecourse, is part of the Arena Leisure Group.
The William Hill Lincoln is the first leg of the traditional Spring Double, with the John Smith’s Grand National being the second leg the following Saturday, April 9. Weights for the Grand National were revealed yesterday and the publication of the William Hill Lincoln weights today will boost punters’ interest in the Spring Double.
The £40,000 William Hill Spring Mile (2pm) on Saturday, April 2, at Doncaster is the consolation race for horses that do not make the cut for the William Hill Lincoln, for which there is a safety limit of 22 runners.
William Hill Lincoln Day also features the £30,000 Listed williamhill.com-Live Casino Cammidge Trophy (2.35pm) over six furlongs and the £12,000 williamhill.com Play Poker Brocklesby Conditions Stakes (3.40pm) for two-year-olds.
Doncaster stages a seven-race programme on Sunday, April 3, William Hill Doncaster Shield Day.

THE WILLIAM HILL LINCOLN FACTS AND FIGURES
* A race called the Lincolnshire Handicap was first run over two miles at Lincoln in August, 1849.
* In 1853, a new fixture was staged at Lincoln in February and featured a race called the Lincoln Spring Handicap, run over a mile and a half and won by Caurire. The distance of this contest was reduced to a mile in 1855 and moved to a date in March.
* In 1859, the two races merged to become the Lincolnshire Handicap, run over a mile in March.
* The Lincolnshire Handicap was run at Lincoln (AThe Carholme@) up to and including 1964. Following that course’s closure, the race moved to Doncaster in 1965 and was renamed the Lincoln Handicap.
* Along with the Grand National, the William Hill Lincoln forms the ASpring Double.@ Jockey Dave Dick achieved the unique distinction of winning both races – he scored in the Lincoln of 1941 on Gloaming, carrying just 7st 4lb and went to triumph in the ADevon Loch@ Grand National of 1956 on ESB, who shouldered 11st 3lb to victory.
* During World War II, three runnings were held at Pontefract (1943-1945). The 1916 renewal was at Lingfield, while there was no race in 1917 or 1918 due to World War I. Due to ,34 million redevelopment at Doncaster, the 2006 renewal was held at Redcar, while in 2007 the race was hosted by Newcastle. It returned to a revamped Doncaster in 2008.
* The dozen winners of the William Hill Lincoln between 1926 and 1937 (King Of Clubs (1926), Priory Park (1927), Dark Warrior (1928), Elton (1929), Leonidas II (1930), Knight Error (1931), Jerome Fandor (1932), Dorigen (1933), Play On (1934), Flamenco (1935), Overcoat (1936) and Marmaduke Jinks (1937)) gave their names to the horses used in the popular board game Totopoly.
* There have been only been two dual winners of the William Hill Lincoln – Ob (1906 & 1907) and Babur (1957 & 1958). No horse has managed to win more than once since the race was transferred to Town Moor.
* The biggest shocks came with the 100/1 shots King Of Clubs (1926), Elton (1929) and Jockey Treble (1947). Since it has been run at Doncaster, the biggest-price winner was the 50/1 shot Bronze Hill (1973) while there have been six 33/1 successes during the same period – Southwark Star (1975), Cuvee Charlie (1988), Evichstar (1990), Roving Minstrel (1995), Stone Ridge (1996) and Zucchero (2002).
* The shortest-price winner was Saucebox (1855, Evens). During its time at Doncaster, seven favourites have obliged – Riot Act (1966), Captains Wings (1978), Cataldi (1985), Right Wing (1999), John Ferneley (2000), Nimello (2001) and Stream Of Gold (2005).
* Since its transfer to Doncaster, the most successful trainer has been Paul Cole, with three wins (Kuala Lipis 1997, John Ferenely, 2000 and Nimello, 2001).
* No jockey has been able to win more than twice since 1965. Jimmy Fortune, Richard Quinn and Jimmy Quinn are the only current jockeys to have ridden two winners, joining Scobie Breasley, Sandy Barclay, Edward Hide and Greville Starkey. The Lincoln was one of the few races to elude Lester Piggott.
